My 5 Favorite New Yorkers: April

I am a couple of days late with My 5 Favorite New Yorkers of April.

These choices are based on this dog’s opinion of each candidate’s dog friendliness, animal advocacy, good-eggishness, and general New Yorkitude. Honorees may be humans, animals, or institutions.

In no particular order and without further ado…

Albert the Dog’s 5 Favorite New Yorkers for April 2015

1. FDNY: An explosion which seems to have resulted from illegal gas tampering led to a seven-alarm fire and the destruction of three buildings in the East Village on March 26th. I do not have much to add, only to give a nod to the firefighters who battled the massive fire. Two young men were killed in the fire, and an investigation is underway.

Some people in the collapsed building and in neighboring buildings have lost their pets, many of whom probably fled during the commotion. Fortunately, a few of the missing cats have been found and returned to their humans, but several cats and one dog are still missing. Here is hoping they find their way to their humans.

2. The TSA employees at La Guardia Airport: The Lady is none too happy about this choice because she has had some unpleasant experiences with TSA agents over the years and does not harbor fond feelings towards them. But I have to applaud the sharp-eyed TSA agent who spotted something unusual in the checked baggage scan and found a stowaway Chihuahua in a suitcase.

 

I have sometimes thought about curling up for a nap among the Guy’s clothes when he packs for a trip, so I can imagine how this Chihuahua ended up inside a Samsonite bound for the cargo hold.

3. The New York Mets: Major League Baseball kicked off (pitched off?) yesterday, or so I have been informed. Truth be told, my People are not really baseball fans. But it has come to my attention that of the two MLB teams in the city only the New York Metropolitans are offering three “Bark in the Park” promotions, during which humans and their dog friends can get tickets to special dog-friendly seating sections. The proceeds from the canine tickets go to support the rescue and adoption organization the North Shore Animal League. The April game is sold out, but tickets to the two dates in May are still available as of this writing.

Despite my People’s lack of interest in baseball, I am very much in favor of dog-friendly events. I feel even more strongly about dog-friendly sporting events because in my experience, sporting events usually coincide with a lot of food being dropped on the ground. Thus, I applaud the Mets for their commitment to dog welfare (and delicious ballpark food).

Based on the lack of a comparable event in the Bronx, I can only assume the Yankees hate dogs.

4. Nina Leen: Nina Leen (d. 1995) was one of the first female photographers to work for Life magazine. She was especially known for her photographs of animals, among them a series of photos from the 1940s of artists, actors, and writers with their dogs. Those photos, among others, are currently on exhibition at Daniel Cooney Fine Art. If you can’t make it to Chelsea, you can see some of her shots here, including a charming one of Ruth Gordon and her black poodle.

  2. The Bean and I really enjoy reading these lists … since we don’t live in New York (or indeed the USA) we often don’t hear about the individual stories. We are very very sad about the fire. Firefighters are extraordinarily brave people. The story of the chihuahua has been taken very seriously by The Bean who will now think twice about curling up on inviting looking clothes in The Man With Two Brains case. By the way – did you read about the Frenchman flying from Poland to Nice recently …. the French baggage handlers thought there was something odd about a case they were taking off the flight and opened it to find a young Russian Woman inside. She was fine but the irony was that she did not need a visa to fly to France but they are both now facing Human Trafficking charges …. humans can be very very silly.

    • Thank you, as always for visiting and commenting. We did not hear about the woman in the suitcase, but that sounds terrible, even if fortunately she was not hurt.
      The fire is horrible, especially as it seems at this point that it was the result of shoddy work and a landlord skirting the regulations, which exist, after all, to prevent things like this from happening.
