Where in New York? Dark Passageway

How well do you know New York? The photo above was taken on a day when this site was closed, but normally, the gate behind me is up. Visitors (humans only, no dogs permitted) proceed through the dark passageway to enter this small site, which is located in downtown Manhattan and is a memorial to an event that occurred in the mid-nineteenth century.

Where in New York am I?

E-mail your answer to using the subject line “WINY” by 5:00 pm EST on Saturday, January 17th. My secretary will randomly choose one winner from all the correct answers.

Update: A winner has been selected and will be revealed soon.

imageThe winner will receive a copy of Good Dog: True Stories of Love, Loss, and Loyalty by the editors of Garden & Gun, courtesy of the humans at HarperCollins. The winner will be notified by e-mail and will have 48 hours to respond and claim the prize. If no response is received within that time, my secretary will choose a runner-up.

Because of my secretary’s limited mailing budget, I’m sorry to say this contest is open only to entrants in the U.S.

Thank you for reading, and good luck!

    • Good morning, Pickled Pastor. It’s a tough one–it’s a small memorial that is easy to overlook if you are not aware of what it is.

It’s not so much the cold that forces me to put boots on, but if we have any snow or ice, then I have to wear them. I despise the whole process of having my boots put on, but the salt and de-icers that people use burn my paws, so I have to wear them. I wear the little rubber ones that protect my paw pads but don’t really do anything to keep them warm. I will try to have my photographer (a/k/a the Lady) get a picture of me with my boots on so that you can see what they look like.
